Andy Murray believes he can still become world number one – Tennis News
Andy Murray thinks that he can still move to the top position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings this year.
Currently placed on the fourth spot, the Brit is lagging behind the current number one, Novak Djokovic, by a huge number of points but he has reduced the difference considerably with second ranked Rafael Nadal and third Roger Federer.
The 24-year-old has more than 8000 ranking points for the first time since October 2009 but such is the dominance of the top three that the Brit is still hanging below them.
Murray’s total was added with 590 points last Monday and he reached 8040 from 7450 points, after a title match showing at the Sony Ericsson Open. The Brit could have further reduced the gap had he defeated Djokovic in the Miami
final.
Federer is just 995 points ahead of Murray and one strong performance from the Brit or a bad showing by the Swiss Maestro can finish this gap. Moreover, Nadal leads by 1895 points but the King of Clay will have to defend a mountain
of points during the clay court season and his recent injury may not allow that.
Talking to the reporters after his loss to Djokovic in Miami, Murray said, “At the start of last week everyone was asking me if Roger is about to go back to world No 1, and if he was in his best ever form, yet I am possibly only
one good tournament away from overtaking him.”
The Brit added, “My goal this year is still to be world No 1, and to do that you’ve got to win Slams, so the two of them go together. The aim now is to peak for the French Open. A few years ago when I reached the quarters there
I felt that was a good result but now I am more confident.”
The three-time Grand Slam finalist has planned a busy schedule during the clay court season. He will start at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters and carry on at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, Mutua Madrid Open and Internazionali
BNL d’Italia.
Murray is in good form and he had a better start to this season than the previous one. The Brit began with title win at the Brisbane International and semi-final performance at the Australian Open. He was the runner-up at the Dubai
Duty Free Tennis Championships and Sony Ericsson Open.
