Andy Murray bidding strongly against Tomas Berdych for the semi-finals – US Open 2012
This year’s Olympic tennis champion, Andy Murray, has carried on his same belligerence at the Flushing Meadows Park and has reached the semi-finals of the US Open this week. He will take on the world number seven, Tomas Berdych
of Czech Republic, for a spot in the title match of the Grand Slam event in New York.
Third seeded Briton has been absolutely destructive in his current campaign and has merely lost two sets en route to the semis. He outmuscled some of the most talented players on the ATP World tour, including the likes of Alex
Bogomolov, Ivan Dodig, Feliciano Lopez and Milos Raonic, in the initial rounds of the US Open Championships. In his most recent encounter, Murray overcame the Croatian number one, Marin Cilic, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-0, to book a date with Berdych.
The sixth seeded Czech contender registered the biggest upset of the tournament on Wednesday night when he stunned the hot favourite world number one, Roger Federer, 7-6(1), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in the quarter-finals. His victory over
the top seeded Swiss has changed the entire course of the tournament and has created new openings for other players to lunge forward.
Murray is now leading the list of hot favourite contenders for winning the US Open Championships. He just bagged the Olympics gold medal last month and is having a sky high confidence to lift his maiden Grand Slam title in New
York. However, he needs to hunt down Berdych in the semi-final before earning a shot at the coveted trophy.
Berdych leads 4-2 against Murray, with the most recent victory coming in the quarterfinal round of the Monte Carlo Masters this season. The Czech has won two of the three matches against the Brit on the hard courts and aims to
replicate the similar sort of heroics which he exhibited against Federer. Murray also knows the calibre of the Czech number one and thinks he need to work hard to yield victory in the semi-finals.
"He's a huge, huge hitter of the ball," said Murray of his next opponent. "Even if you want to dictate points and be aggressive, he can take that away from you because he's such a powerful guy. You need to be smart against him. You
need to use good variation and try not and give him the same ball over and over, because he likes that."
The other semi-final of the tournament will feature the world number two, Novak Djokovic and the fourth seed Spaniard, David Ferrer.
