Andy Murray bounces over Janko Tipsarevic to reach semis – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
British number one, Andy Murray, made an epic comeback to outrun the ninth Janko Tipsarevic, in a three set thriller at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 on Wednesday. He nudged up a 4-6, 6-3,
6-4 victory against the 27-year-old to progress into the last four at this Masters 1000 event held at Key Biscayne.
The world number four suffered the first blow in the opening game and regardless of taking the lead at 4-2, he lost the opener. However, he found his rhythm after trailing 0-2 in the second
set and ultimately pulled out the victory in two hours and 38 minutes. As a result, Murray improved to a 5-3 lifetime at the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the Serb.
"Today's match was really important for me to get through after how it was going, [fighting] back after being a break down a few times in the second set," the Scot commented in a courtside
interview. "And then also, at the end of the third set when I was up a break, he had break point in a tight game, and I came up with some big serves and served my way out of trouble, which is important. [They were] tough, tough conditions. But I thought I
struck the ball pretty well from the back of the court."
Seeded ninth in the tournament, Tipsarevic made a strong entry at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. He drew the first blood in the opening game and took the initial lead. Later, the Serbian
number two lost his track and after gifting away his serve twice, he went 2-4 down. However, he made a fitting reply and reeled off the following four games in a row to seal the opener with a 6-4 win.
Murray lost his serve in the opening game again in the following set and went 0-2 down. In spite of recovering in the fourth game, he gifted away his serve once more in the very next game.
However, the Scot unleashed flurry of forehands to wipe out the following four games successively, eventually pulling out the equaliser by winning six games to three.
The 24-year-old kept momentum floating in the final set which mater the most. He earned the desiderated break in the third game and held entire serves with conviction, consequently bagging
the decider with a 6-4 score line.
Next up for the Scot is the former world number one, Rafael Nadal, who outlasted Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in three sets.
