Andy Murray bounces over Tomas Berdych to reach title-round of US Open – Tennis Special
British number one, Andy Murray, made a spectacular comeback from a set down to outmuscle the sixth seed, Tomas Berdych, in a four-set thriller at the US Open 2012 on Saturday. He summed up a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(7) victory against the Czech star to secure
a place in the final showdown at this final of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Queens, New York City.
Seeded third in this major event, Murray made a sloppy start but quickly found his rhythm. He needed three hours and 58 minutes to record the victory and progressed into the final round at the USTA Billie Jean Kong National Tennis Center. He also avenged
his loss at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters earlier this circuit and lowered trail in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 3-4 against the Czech number one.
Murray commented in an on-court interview after stealing the limelight:
"It's been [a] great [few months].To be in the final and get the chance to play for a Grand Slam is great. My results in the Slams over the last couple of years have been very good. Obviously, this year in the major tournaments, along with the Olympics,
it's been my best year. [I have] never made two Grand Slam finals in a year, so that's obviously a good sign that I'm playing better and still learning."
Eyeing for his maiden Grand Slam glory, Berdych thundered into the Arthur Ashe’s Stadium. He suffered the first blow in the third game to trail at 1-2. However, he quickly counterattacked in the very next game and not only held his remaining serves but got
the breakthrough in the last game, eventually sealing the opener by winning seven games to five.
The Olympic champion made a fitting reply in the proceeding set and got the desiderated break in the opening game to take the initial lead. He availed another break opportunity in the fifth game and jumped to a 5-1 lead. Murray plucked his serve once again
and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
Ranked fourth in the world, Murray maintained his intensity in the third set. He unleashed his true form and reeled off four games in a row before the Czech could hold on. The Scot pocketed the last two games and ultimately bagged a breadstick.
Murray kept momentum rolling in the fourth set and after breaking the Czech’s opening serve, he jumped to a 3-0 lead. Regardless of losing his edge in the fifth game, the Scot remained focused and dragged the set to a tie-breaker. He edged past the world
number seven in it and clicked the set with a 7-6(7) win.
Next in queue for Murray is the conqueror of the match between fourth seed David Ferrer and the defending champion, Novak Djokovic from Serbia. The Scot needs to carry his rhythm in order to capture his maiden Grand Slam title.
