Andy Murray bows out to Stanislas Wawrinka in pre-quarters – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2013
Olympic gold medallist, Andy Murray, showed dismal performance, eventually exiting in the third round at the hands of Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2013 on Thursday. He endured a 1-6, 2-6 loss against the Swiss veteran at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event taking place in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
The world number two, Murray made a dismal entry at the Monte Carlo Country Club. As a result, he was sent back home in the third round.
"I think I just need to try and cut down the mistakes and make sure I'm able to dictate more of the points by getting better depth on the ball. I think that will help,” the British number one was quoted in an interview after losing the match.
The Dunblane native, Murray held his opening serve with poise. However, he stepped off steam afterwards. Wawrinka on the other hand went berserk and reeled off six games, eventually pulling out the breadstick with ease.
Currently ranked number two in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Murray managed to level the scores at 2-2 in the proceeding set. However, he lost his track again and subsequently suffered a 2-6 loss.
Summing up the higher seed’s performance, Murray clobbered a lower first serve share of 57 per cent as compared to his rival’s 65 per cent and poorly marked 13 out of 27 points on it. In addition to this, he faced five aces and spilled 24 unforced errors in this battle.
The Swiss legend on the other hand reflected about Murray:
"He's an amazing player. He's always tough to beat. Therefore, to beat Andy that easy was a big surprise, for sure. I'm playing really good, really strong, really confident with my game. I know what he's looking for in his game. He's playing slow, he's playing from the baseline, he's not putting so much pressure. For me on clay, it's perfect."
With this victory, Wawrinka will take on the local number one, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The French star tumbled Austria’s Jurgen Melzer with a bagel to power into the last eight.
