Andy Murray claims the third spot in ATP World Rankings – Tennis News
Entire Flushing Meadows Park burst into cheers of joy as the British number one, Andy Murray, delivered his final blow to win the all-prestigious US Open Championships after disposing of the world number two defending champion, Novak Djokovic, in the final showdown on Monday. Murray became the first tennis professional from his country to taste the joy of a Grand Slam victory since 1936.
Murray’s maiden Grand Slam victory not only brought a long-awaited end to his Major title drought, but also propelled him to the world number three spot in the latest release of South African Airways ATP World Rankings on Tuesday. He has surpassed the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, to break into the elite Top-3 rankings and has pushed the Spaniard to the number four slot in the world charts.
The defending champion, Djokovic, had won last three hard court Grand Slam tournaments and was looking very strong to sustain the US Open trophy. He was stunned by an early onslaught from Murray, who reeled off the opening two sets to impose a 2-0 lead in the Monday’s crunch game. The Serbian number one rallied past from behind and clinched the next two sets to bring the match score to 2-2. The entire crowd at the glorious Flushing Meadows Park was right on the edges of their seats as Murray brutally manhandled the second seeded Serbian in the decisive fifth set and finished off his most memorable victory in grand fashion.
"It was incredibly tricky conditions," Murray said during the trophy presentation. "After the third and fourth sets it was tough mentally for me... Novak is so, so strong. He fights till the end in every single match and I don't know how I managed to come through in the end. It was close to five hours and I've had some really long and tough matches. I just managed to get through."
Murray has claimed his maiden Grand Slam title, won the Olympic gold medal and has broken into the Top-3 rankings this season. It is truly an amazing feat from the young Brit, depicting his devastating form and he desires to bag more titles before the ending of the current season.
