Andy Murray conquers Novak Djokovic and the US Open – Tennis Special
British number one, Andy Murray, stunned the defending champion, Novak Djokovic, in a five-set mouth-watering clash at the Flushing Meadows on Monday. He nudged up a 7-6(10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 victory against the second seed to capture his maiden Grand
Slam title at this major hard court event held in Queens in New York City, United States.
Murray became the first British contender to capture a Grand Slam title since 1936 in a match that equalled the longest US Open final in history. He required almost five hours to steal the show and lowered trail in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
Head 2 Head Series by 7-8 against the former world number one.
The high flying Scot stated in the trophy presentation:
"It was incredibly tricky conditions. After the third and fourth sets it was tough mentally for me... Novak is so, so strong. He fights till the end in every single match and I don't know how I managed to come through in the end. It was close to five hours
and I've had some really long and tough matches. I just managed to get through."
Djokovic praised the British ace after the match:
"It wasn't to be. I want to congratulate Andy for his first Grand Slam. He absolutely deserves it. I gave it all. It was another tremendous match to be a part of."
The Olympic gold medallist thundered into the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. Regardless of squandering his lead in the very next game, Murray broke the Serb’s serve again
in the fifth game and jumped to a 4-2 lead. He levelled the scores in the eighth game but dominated in the 24-minute tie-breaker to click the opener with a 7-6(10) win.
Seeded third in this event, Murray kept momentum rolling in the following set. He went on a four-game killing spree before the Serb could snatch a break back. Apart from losing his edge in the ninth game, the Brit sealed the set by winning seven games to
five after getting the breakthrough in the last game.
Djokovic turned the tables on his fellow 25-year-old in the third set. He got the desiderated break in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. He maintained consistency in his game and availed another break opportunity in the seventh game, ultimately registering
a 6-2 success.
Ranked second in the world, Djokovic held in composure in the proceeding set and broke the British’s opening serve to jump to a 2-0 lead. He warded off the lone breakpoint he came across to keep his entire serves and capitalised on another break chance in
the last game, subsequently grabbing the equaliser with a 6-3 success.
The match was poised on a knife edge but Murray was the one who re-gained his momentum and early ascendancy. Through exquisite forehands from his arsenal of skills, the Brit cruised to a 3-0 lead with two breaks of serve. Apart from losing his serve in the
follow-up game, Murray cashed in his third break opportunity in the seventh game and ultimately bagged the decider with a 6-2 score line.
After prevailing in the Arthur Ashe stadium, Murray got his breakthrough major title and became the second person to break Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal dominance in Grand Slams.
