Andy Murray conquers Novak Djokovic to end Britain’s wait – Tennis News
In an epic final between top two stars, Andy Murray outclassed the top seeded Serb, Novak Djokovic, in straight sets at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Sunday. With this 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 victory, Murray became the first British
champion since Fred Perry in 1936 to capture this prestigious grass court title.
Seeded second in this event, Murray showed exceptional tennis skills to outmuscle the Serbian ace in their 19th meeting. The Brit captured the US Open crown last year by triumphing over Djokovic. However, he bowed out
to the Serb in their last three meetings, including the Australian Open final earlier this season. After stealing the show, Murray avenged his defeat and became the first Brit in 77 years to capture Wimbledon crown.
The jubilant Murray commented in a post match presser, "It feels slightly different to last year. Last year was one of the toughest moments of my career. It was a tough match and an unbelievably long final game. I don't know how
I managed to come through. I'm just so glad. I understand how much everyone wanted to see a British winner at Wimbledon. I tried my best. I've played Novak many times. He's going to go down as one of the biggest fighters. That made it extra tough; I just managed
to squeeze through in the end."
Murray drew the first blood in the third game to take the initial lead. Despite squandering his edge in the very next game, the Scot stayed focused and got the breakthrough in the seventh game. He held his remaining serves with
poise and secured the opener by winning six games to four.
The Dunblane, Scotland, native lost his track towards the following set. He suffered the first blow in the fourth game and fell at 1-4. However, Murray re-gained his strength afterwards and not only recovered in the seventh game
but cashed another break chance in the second last game to clinch the set with a 7-5 score line.
The 26-year-old maintained consistency in his game in the third set and broke Djokovic’s opening serve to go 2-0 up. Regardless of losing the following four games, Murray stayed calm and recovered in the seventh game. The Scot
cashed another break chance in the ninth game and subsequently pocketed the match with a 6-4 win.
With this victory, Murray lowered the trail in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 8-11 against the world number one and earned 2000 Emirates ATP World Tour Ranking points. In addition to this, the gracious Murray donated his £1.6
million to charity.
