Andy Murray contented on the changes made to the US Open Championships – Tennis News
United States Tennis Association has recently declared that 2013 US Open Championships will be extended into the third week of play and the men’s title match will be held on Monday’s eve. The semi-final matches are scheduled to
be played on Saturday.
The women’s final shall be played on Sunday instead, with the final-four round matches played on Friday, giving an extra day to the female players as well to prepare for the title shot in the crunch game.
The reigning US Open Champion, Andy Murray, was very pleased on this decision and admired the tournament organizers for giving a day-off to the qualified finalists before the big match of the Grand Slam event. The third ranked
Briton believes that this alteration will give some extra time to the finalists to practice and relax.
“I'm pleased that the USTA has modified the US Open schedule to include a day of rest between the semi-finals and final,” said the number one British tennis super star. “Together with the prize money increase, it's good that they've
taken on board the players' concerns.”
Other significant changes made for the fourth Grand Slam tournament of the next year include a hefty raise in the prize money. An increase of four million US dollars to the prize money for the 2013 US Open Championships now takes
the figure up to 29.5 million US dollars. Obviously this soared prize money will be another attraction to the top players besides winning the coveted Grand Slam title next year.
The current US Open women’s champion, Serena Williams, was also delighted to know these alterations for the next edition of the tournament. She thinks such changes will increase players’ interest in the event and more thrilling
matches will be seen.
“Both the prize money increase and the addition of a day of rest are great for the players,” said the third ranked Williams. “These moves make the tournament stronger than it's ever been for all players.”
The coveted Grand Slam tournament will begin from 26th of August until the 9th of September 2013, featuring the top class tennis athletes from all over the world.
