Andy Murray cripples Mikhail Youzhny; sets-up Verdasco clash – Wimbledon Championships 2013
British number one, Andy Murray, cruised past the 20th seed, Mikhail Youzhny, with a breadstick at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Monday. He nudged up a 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-1 victory against the Russian star to secure
a place in the final-eight at this Major grass court event taking place in London, United Kingdom.
Seeded second in this prestigious event, Murray displayed brilliant tennis and prevailed throughout the battle. As a result, the Brit improved to 3-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against the former top-tenner and stayed
on track to win at the Grand Slam event at home.
The last year’s runner-up was quoted in a post match presser, “I felt good so far. I played some good matches. Today, was a tough one. It was the toughest test for me, and I came through it well. It will be a different challenge
on Wednesday. I'll get myself ready for that and hopefully play well."
With an early break of serve, Murray leaped to a 3-1 lead. He then held his composure and pulled out the opener with a 6-4 score line.
The 26-year-old maintained consistency in his game in the following set. He drew the first blood in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Despite losing his following two serves and falling at 2-5, Murray stayed focused and recovered
in the ninth game. The set went to a tie-breaker where the Brit prevailed and clinched the set with a 7-6(5) success.
In the third set, the high flying Brit’s skills were fully polished. He got the much awaited break in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. After the Russian held his serve in the fourth game, Murray stroke out the last three
games and clinched the set with a breadstick.
The Dunblane native reflected about his upcoming battle, "Verdasco is a very, very good tennis player. He's extremely dangerous when he's on his game."
The former world number seven, Verdasco on the other hand recorded a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory against the French challenger, Kenny de Schepper.
Verdasco praised the Brit in an on-court interview after triumphing over de Schepper, "He's a great player, one of the best players on tour. Of course, it is going to be difficult to beat him, also with the crowd. You need to have
faith and try your best to try to win."
With this triumph, Verdasco became the seventh Spaniard in Open Era to secure a place in the last eight at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
