Andy Murray crushes Roger Federer to win Gold Medal – London Olympics
World number four, Andy Murray of Great Britain, fulfilled his dream of winning the Olympics gold medal by bulldozing the top seeded Swiss player, Roger Federer, in the final of 2012 London Games on Sunday.
Murray gave no chance to the Swiss Maestro, as he dropped just seven games in the entire match and captured it in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in just an hour and 56 minutes.
The third seed took revenge from Federer, as the 17-time Grand Slam champion had beaten him in the Wimbledon final at the same venue four weeks back.
There was no break early on in the match, as Murray and Federer held their serve in the first four games to take the score to 2-2. However, the British number one pressed the accelerator afterwards, as he grabbed four in a row
to close it 6-2.
Murray made sure that history does not repeat itself, as Federer had bounced back to win three successive sets after the Brit had won the opener in Wimbledon final. The 25-year-old made a flying start, capturing opening five games
to race to a 5-0 lead. Federer succeeded in holding his serve in the sixth to avoid a bagel but that was all for him, as Murray grabbed it 6-1.
Third set was more competitive than the first two, as the Brit and his Swiss opponent did not lose serve in the opening four games to level the score at 2-2. Murray struck in the fifth and consolidated on it to gain a 4-2 advantage.
The British star did not allow Federer to stage a comeback, serving it out at 5-4.
Murray was extremely happy on achieving his goal, as he stated, "The biggest win of my life. This week's been absolutely incredible, I've had a lot of fun. I felt so fresh on the court today. I didn't feel nervous really at all,
apart from at the beginning of the match. The support's been unbelievable."
The British player has been unable to win a Grand Slam so far but he has captured an Olympic Gold now. The London, England resident has lost four back to back Major finals.
He added, "It's definitely different. I've won an Olympic gold medal. I haven't won a Grand Slam. I know how this feels and it feels great. I've lost some tough matches in some tough finals and that's hurt me a lot. I think tennis
in the Olympics is getting better each time it's played.”
Murray also wiped off the disappointment of Beijing Olympics, where he lost in the first round.
