Andy Murray defeats Richard Gasquet to move into quarterfinals – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Top Brit Andy Murray moved into the quarterfinals at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships after he humbled Frenchman Richard Gasquet in three sets in their fourth round match in London, England on Monday, 27th June. He took
a little over two hours to secure a 7-6(3), 6-3,
Standing at a level 2-2 head-to-head, Gasquet was eager to return the defeat he suffered at the hands of the Brit back in their 2008 matchup here. Murray, on the other hand, backed by the home crowd was determined to repeat the
same feat.
Playing in their fifth match together, Gasquet won the toss and elected to serve first, rushing to put himself on the scoreboard comfortably. The in-form French continued his assault in the second game as he pushed Murray to a
breakpoint. However, the resilient Brit saved the breakpoint and levelled the score at 1-1. From there on play continued to follow suit as the score remain tied for the next ten games forcing the set into a tiebreaker.
Murray rushed to an early lead in the tiebreaker extending it to eventually clinch the set 7-3 and go one up in the set score. Although Murray’s first serve precision left a lot to be desired, he still managed to convert a similar
point percentage on it. The Brit hit thirteen winners and three aces, taking almost an hour to secure a set win.
The second set started on even footing with the score tied for the first six games. A lucky break for Murray in the eighth game put the Brit in a 5-3 lead, leaving him serving for the set. With powerful winners and superb aces,
Murray served out the set securing a 6-3 win and a 2-0 lead in the set score.
Maintaining his dominance in the third set, Murray clinched an early break to lead the set 2-0, extending it to 4-2 moments later. Continuing his assault on the Frenchman, the Scot secured another break in the seventh game to lead
the set 5-2. The in-form Brit brilliantly served out the set at 5-2, clinching a 6-2 win and sealing his straight sets victory.
Murray moves on ahead to play either Pole Lukasz Kubot or Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinal.
