Andy Murray devastates Donald Young to claim season second title – PTT Thailand Open 2011
British number one, Andy Murray, had no trouble in annihilating the 43rd ranked American, Donald Young, in the final showdown of the PTT Thailand Open on Sunday afternoon.
The top seeded Briton took merely 48 minutes of play to dump the 22-year-old in straight sets 6-2, 6-0, to claim the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 championship. Murray’s victory extended his title count
to 19, as he registered his 45th victory of the running season.
Being played on the indoor hard courts of the Impact Arena, Bangkok, Thailand, the one-sided contest displayed sheer dominance of the world number four. Murray appeared absolutely unplayable in the competition and won 12 of the
total 14 games being played in the matchup.
“In terms of the way I’m playing it’s very good to get off to a start like that on this stretch and hopefully I can continue that through Shanghai,” said the Scot, who is targeting a Top 3 finish to the season. “It’s a very good
start. Roger [Federer] always plays very well on the European indoor courts, so I’m sure I’m going to have to win a lot more matches if I want to finish No. 3. That’s the goal and I’ll keep working hard to give myself a shot at doing that.”
It was a second straight defeat for Young at the hands of Murray in the running year, after the American registered a win over him in Indian Wells. The Briton avenged his defeat in the US Open, defeating Young in straight sets
6-2, 6-3, 6-3, and his Sunday’s victory makes his head-to-head record 2-1 against the 22-year-old American.
The belligerent top seed was phenomenal with his serve in the competition, banging 76 per cent of it on target and dropping just five points on it. Murray converted all of his five break opportunities in the game and didn’t face
a single break point from his opponent in the entire matchup. Young collected just eight out of 25 first serve points in the contest, while Murray finished far ahead of him by clinching 23 out of 28 points.
The British number one nailed two serve breaks right up in the contest to put his opponent under early pressure. Once pocketing the first set at 6-2, Murray raced through all the games in the next set, stinging three straight serve
breaks to the American serve and concluded victory at 6-0 in just 48 minutes. A total of 71 points were played in the match, with Murray securing 51 and Young trailing far behind with a mere 20.
