Andy Murray dismisses Flavio Cipolla in his opening match – Rogers Cup 2012
British top, Andy Murray, devastated the Italian qualifier, Flavio Cipolla, with a breadstick at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Wednesday. He jolted down a 6-1, 6-3 victory against the world number 97 to power into the third round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event taking place in Toronto, Canada.
Murray, who is coming off winning gold medal at the London Olympics last week, carried his rhythm at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event in Rexall Centre. He quickly recorded a straight set victory in one hour and 22 minutes against the 28-year-old to cruise into the pre-quarters.
The 25-year-old stated in an on-court interview after winning the match:
"After playing for eight weeks on grass pretty much, it's very different here. The ball is very quick compared with Wimbledon. It also bounces much higher. The court is much slower as well, so there are a lot of things to change. Only got a couple hits on the court, so it was good to play a match and get a win fairly comfortably."
Seeded second in this tournament, Murray stepped into this outdoor hard court tournament with conviction. He jumped to a 3-0 lead after drawing the first blood in the second game. After Cipolla held his serve in the fourth game, the Brit maintained his intensity and stroke out the last three games, eventually sealing the opener with a breadstick.
The world number four, Murray kept momentum rolling in the follow-up set. He got the coveted break in the fifth game and leaped to a 4-2 lead. The Scot kept his remaining serves with self-assurance and cashed in another break chance in the last game, consequently clicking the set with a 6-3 success.
Overall, the Dunblane native clobbered a lower first serve share but blocked all six breakpoints he came across to pluck his entire serves. He also fired four aces and converted four out of nine break chances to his advantage.
Next in queue for the Scot is the local number one, Milos Raonic.
Murray commented about his next match-up against the 21-year-old:
"It will be tough. He'll obviously be very motivated playing in his own country. He's improved a lot over the last year, year and a half. He's playing really, really good tennis.”
The 16th seeded Canadian eased past his doubles partner, Viktor Troicki, in straight sets to set up this duel.
