Andy Murray disposes of Feliciano Lopez to reach the semi-finals – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Local crowd at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, erupted in sheer joy when the home favourite, Andy Murray, defeated the Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez, in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon
Championships on Wednesday.
The world number four, Murray, cruised through the contest without facing much trouble from Lopez, ejecting him in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The Spaniard hung in the contest for just two hours before he submitted the game to
the belligerent fourth seed to let him in the semi-finals of the Grand Slam tournament.
As it was already anticipated, Lopez proved to be a wall of sand against the in-form Briton and failed to pose some serious resistance in the matchup. The Spaniard appeared in no sort of form at all against the British number one
and suffered his fifth consecutive defeat at the hands of Murray to trail 0-5 in their head-to-head series.
The 24-year-old Briton is now unbeaten on grass this season, as he bagged a singles title at Queen’s Club, just before the start of his Wimbledon campaign. Murray cracked in 40 winners in the match and broke the opponent’s serve
three out of 10 times en route to victory.
The one-sided contest witnessed excellent power hitting from the fourth seed, along with crafty manoeuvres to give no chance to his opponent to settle in the matchup. Lopez had two opportunities to break the opponent’s serve but
it was the sheer brilliance of Murray which denied him on both occasions.
The Briton got hold of the game in the opening set by breaking the Spanish serve early to bring Lopez under pressure. Nine unforced errors from Lopez assisted Murray to clinch the first set at 6-3 and get one up in the contest.
Lopez slumped further in the next set and continued to spray errant shots all over the court to exacerbate his position in the match. Murray reeled of 13 out of 14 first serve points and broke the Spaniard once again to seal the
second set 6-4, inching closer to straight sets victory. The dejected Spaniard couldn’t hold the fury of Murray for much long in the third set and dropped his serve in the seventh game to let the Briton away with a comprehensive victory at 6-4,
The ultimate challenge for Murray still awaits him in the semi-final, when he will take on the world number one, Rafael Nadal of Spain for a place in the final of Wimbledon Championships.
