Andy Murray doesn’t think of himself as the best player of the current season – Tennis News
Newly promoted world number three, Andy Murray, reigned supreme over the defending champion, Novak Djokovic, in the final of the US Open Championship to claim his maiden Grand Slam Championship of the career. He is the first British
professional to win the Major title since 1936. It is an astounding achievement for the Scot who was under the cosh having witnessed immense criticism for his inability to win any of the big four titles.
However, he proved everyone wrong on the eve of Monday; winning the first two sets before losing a couple of them. The comeback was emphatic enough to earn him the first Grand Slam victory of the career at the age of 25. Earlier
in the season, he ousted the reigning world number one, Roger Federer, to become the Olympics gold medallist. So, the US Open title is just like the icing on the cake.
Despite so many achievements, Murray denied to rate himself as the best player of the year. He commented, “I don't think I have had the best year on the tour, no. I think the last few months have been great for me, but there is
more to the tennis tour than just the Grand Slams.”
In a post-match interview, the Scot further added, “Novak has played great tennis in most of the Masters Series, as well. Roger has got himself back to No. 1. I think it is important to remember the tennis season starts in January,
finishes in November. There are four Slams, but there are also many other tournaments to get to No. 1 in the world. I think if you're No. 1 you deserve to be the player of the year.”
He confessed that the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, and his arch rival, Novak Djokovic, deserved the title to be the best players of the season to date. It might be pretty early to think that the number one Briton will dethrone
the likes of the Swiss legend at the season-end finale. However, there is no doubt at all that he is probably one of the strongest contenders to reach the finals at least having played two back-to-back Grand Slam finales already.
Former world number one, Rafael Nadal, is also out of action due to knee injury so the competition is definitely low. It is high time for Murray to cash in the opportunity and grab as many titles as he can.
