Andy Murray dumps Michael Berrer in second round – PTT Thailand Open 2011
World number four, Andy Murray of the Great Britain, had no real trouble in disposing off the unseeded German competitor, Michael Berrer, in the second round of the PTT Thailand Open on Thursday.
The 2005 semi-finalist, Murray, took just 71 minutes of play to wrap up a comprehensive straight sets victory 6-4, 6-2, to end the voyage of the German at Bangkok, Thailand. Being the top seeded in the tournament, the Briton received
a bye to the second round and won his contest against Berrer to book a spot in the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
It was Murray’s 42nd victory in the running ATP season and the second one against the German veteran. The Briton defeated Berrer at the Roland Garros this year in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32 and his
Thursday’s win extended his head-to-head lead against him by 2-0.
The top seed remained unbroken in the entire matchup and struck three out of seven break points en route to victory. His serve game was phenomenal and his baseline defence prevented his opponent to take the better of him. Berrer
crafted two break opportunities in the contest but was denied everytime by the sheer brilliance of the world number four.
“I served well throughout,” said Murray, who arrived in Bangkok on Monday afternoon. “I’m still trying to overcome the jetlag a little bit, as I find it difficult travelling East. I started playing better in the second set, moving
well.”
Murray got the upper hand in the contest when he broke the German serve in the third game of the match to lead 3-1. The Briton dropped just four points on his serve in the opening set and went on to pocket the set at 6-4, getting
1-0 in the contest.
Berrer’s poor slump continued in the following set and he dropped his serve early to fall 1-3 again. Murray continued with his belligerence and his thirds break point conversion proved decisive in the game, finishing off the matchup
at 6-2 to reach the quarter-final draw.
Murray will take on the unseeded Bulgarian, Grigor Dimitrov, in the round of eight to fight for a place in the semis of the Thailand Open. Dimitrov made his way to the quarter-finals after outplaying the Italian qualifier, Simone
Bolelli, 7-6(8), 6-1, in the second of the tournament to book a clash with the world number four.
