Andy Murray eager to diminish the loopholes in his clay court game – Tennis News
World number two, Andy Murray, lost to the Swiss superstar, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the most embarrassing fashion at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Thursday. He managed to grab just three games in the entire match and that wasn’t
expected of him at all especially considering the form he was enjoying. However, the type of play at the clay courts is entirely different and it took a toll on the right-handed number one Briton.
Murray confessed the he failed to adapt to the transformation from hard courts to clay by confessing, “I need to make sure I get good practice in, that's for sure, over the next two weeks. I played a lot of matches this year, obviously
just not on the clay. The issue is [there are] certain things I need to iron out in my game, things I need to work on.”
He added, “No one wants to lose matches like [today's]. But hopefully I can use it as motivation to improve because I need to do a lot of work. Sometimes you can squeeze through matches and not necessarily play well, [but] you
don't actually see what's gone wrong because you've won the matches, so you think it’s okay.”
It will be a difficult task for the Ivan Lendl to prepare the reigning US Open for the entire clay court season because he is already low on confidence after losing out in such a depressing fashion and requires immense change in
technique to learn the traits of surviving at the red dirt.
The stats for the Scot clearly show his lack of commitment to the clay court season. He has won 26 titles in his career but hasn’t contested a single clay court final which is quite astonishing. It will take something extraordinary
for him to meet the likes of the Spanish players who have always prevailed at red dirt especially the left-handed warrior, Rafael Nadal, who is looking to clinch the ninth straight title in Monaco by the end of this week.
Murray has to make sure that he adapts to the changed pace of play. He will deteriorate to world number three by the start of new week.
