Andy Murray eliminates Andy Roddick to reach the quarter-finals – BNP Paribas Masters 2011
No troubles at all for the belligerent world number three, Andy Murray of the Great Britain, as he cruised past the former world number one, Andy Roddick of the United States, in the third round of the BNP Paribas Masters on Thursday
afternoon.
The second seeded Briton absolutely manhandled 13th seed Roddick in the contest, outclassing him in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to make a berth in the quarter-final round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
World Tour 1000 event.
It was a totally one-sided affair, with 29-year-old American badly failing to pose any serious resistance against the fury of the second seeded Scott. It was Roddick’s second humiliating defeat at the hands of Murray in the current
season, as he was also dumped in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at the Queen’s Club, London, earlier this year. Murray booked a place in the final eight of the Masters Series event and now leads 8-3 in all-time head-to-head series against the 15th ranked
American.
24-year-old Murray cracked in seven thudding aces and dropped just four points on his first serve, clinching 20 out of 24 points, en route to victory. He belted 27 assertive winners in the game, with Roddick lagging far behind
with merely four winners to finish on the losing side. The second seed converted four out of six break opportunities in the match, breaking the American serve twice in each set to cruise through the contest with commanding ease.
Roddick dropped his serve in the very first game of the match, to trail 0-2 early and then suffered another blow from the Briton in the seventh game to submit the first set at 2-6. Murray carried on with his aggressive game play
in the following set as well, breaking the 13th seed opponent twice at the start of the second set to lead 4-0. He eventually closed out the contest at 6-2 to make a place in the quarter-final draw of the Paris Masters.
Murray will take on the winner of the second round clash between the fifth seeded Czech competitor, Tomas Berdych and the 11th seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters.
