Andy Murray enjoys playing at the O2 Arena in London – Tennis News
World number three, Andy Murray, took off his Barclays ATP World Tour Finals campaign in style and has cited that he really enjoys playing at the glorious O2 Arena in London. The home favourite has been consistently qualifying
for the season-ending finale for a number of years and regard this event as one of the most prestigious ones.
Murray said, “I think the reason why it's special to a lot of the players, [is that] not everybody can qualify for it. I'm sure a lot of the players would want to play here, but there's only eight spots. It's a whole year's work
getting here.”
“It’s a beautiful stadium to play in. It's a different atmosphere to most of the tournaments we're at. We take the boat to the courts, which we don't do anywhere else. We have our own locker rooms. It's a nice tournament. They
put on a great event.”
Murray featured his opening Round Robin match against the Czech number one, Tomas Berdych, on Monday and had to dig deep before coming out as the winner. He laboured hard for two hours and 16 minutes before settling the clash in
three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was a really stiff encounter for the British number one, as he was playing against one of the top performers of the season and was bearing the pressure of playing in front of the home crowd as well.
Berdych was leading 4-3 in the head-to-head series prior to Monday’s encounter and had already defeated Murray in the quarter-finals of Monte Carlo Masters this season. He had a brilliant start to the contest and took the opener
comprehensively to get the upper hand in the contest. Murray took his time to get settled in the competition and once finding his winning groove, the Brit never looked back at Berdych in the rest of the match. He cruised through the following two sets and
registered his first victory in the Round Robin Group A match to get going strongly.
Murray has never won the ATP World Tour Finals title in his career before. The nest runs he had at O2 Arena came in 2008 and 2010 when he reached the semi-final rounds.
