Andy Murray facing tough competition in London Olympics first round – Tennis News
Seeded at number three, Andy Murray will be facing a tough draw against the Swiss tennis ace, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the first round of the London Olympics. This match will be the one of the most entertaining match in the preliminary
rounds of the event as both the players have equal opportunity to win.
Both the players have encountered each other 10 times in the past and resulting in Murray scoring a lead of 6-4. He scored a straight set victory 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 at the US Open in 2008 against the Swiss. At the 2009 Wimbledon Championships,
the Scot lost the initial set of the match to Wawrinka; however, he picked up momentum and look the lead by 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
The number two Swiss is determined to reclaim his Top-10 spot in world ratings. He is currently holding number 26 on the world charts and will be defending the gold medal in doubles category with his fellow compatriot, Roger Federer.
His performance at the Wimbledon this year was not satisfactory, as he had lost in the initial round to Australia, Jurgen Melzer. However, with his return to the courts of All- England-Club he struggles to maintain his finest form.
Murray, world number four, has neither won a single gold medal nor a Grand Slam title in his career so far. Hence, the first match will be a great challenge for the British professional. In Beijing Olympics 2008, he lost in the
initial round at the hands of Chinese Taipei's Lu Yen-Hsun.
Paul Hutchins, the manager of the British team said, “Andy has been practising with Wawrinka all week, so they will certainly know each other well. It is a tough draw, but Andy is the seeded player and will be looking to do very
well here. It’s a tough draw for both”.
However, the battle for the 25-year-old does not end after the initial round. He will be having tough competition with Richard Gasquet, Tomas Berdych in the subsequent matches. Many predict that there is a great probably that he
will be facing the world number two Novak Djokovic, defending bronze medallist this season, in the semi-final draw but only if he manages to reach that far.
The initial round of the Olympics should not be a big of a deal for Murray. The point score difference between the two player is huge and similarly, their performance. The British professional also has the home advantage at Wimbledon
this year and seems to be more determined after his defeat to the champion, Federer, in the final.
The British number one is surely, amongst the top contender for the Olympic gold. He is persistent to bring and emphatic start off to the first round of his home Olympics
