Andy Murray fails to win Sports Personality of the Year Award – Tennis News
Great Britain’s most successful tennis player in the last seven decades, Andy Murray, has failed to capture one most of the most coveted sports awards of his country, as BBC Sports Personality of the Year title for 2012 has gone
to cyclist Bradley Wiggins.
Murray had the most successful season of his career so far, as he captured his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open and also won the Gold Medal at the London Olympics.
The 25-year-old became the first tennis player from his country to win a Major in the last 76 years. The Gold Medal in men’s singles event at the biggest sports event of the world came after a gap of more than 100 years.
However, all that was not enough for Murray to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, as British public thought that Wiggin’s efforts were more amazing. The 32-year-old became the first ever cyclist from his country
to win the Tour de France. Then he doubled up his achievement by capturing Gold Medal at the London Olympics.
Wiggins not only defeated Murray for this award but 10 other sporting heroes of Great Britain, who had done incredibly well in 2012. One of them is the heptathlon champion of the London Olympics, Jessica Ennis. World number one
golfer and US PGA Champion, Rory McIlroy, was also one of the top contenders for this award.
Speaking to the media, Wiggins thanked everyone who voted for him, “I'm just going to say thank you very much for everyone who picked the phone up and voted. What a year. And to stand on this stage with these people next to me
is incredible.”
On the other hand, Murray has vowed that he would be fitter than ever in the next season. The British number one tennis player is expected to do even better in 2013.
Murray said, “I would love to win Wimbledon and more grand slams and I’m working hard and doing everything I can to achieve that. I think adding more consistency, so the focus is the same throughout the year regardless of the tournament,
will also be a goal. 2012 was my best year so far on the tour, I’d love to make 2013 special as well.”
The British star’s fans would hope that Murray succeed in winning the Wimbledon title next year, which will almost make sure that he becomes the winner of next year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
