Andy Murray felt like an alien at his home soil during the contest against Roger Federer – Tennis News
In the O2 Arena at London where the number one Briton, Andy Murray, was up against the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, mammoth crowd was present on the eve of Monday to witness the two tennis icons take on each other for the shot
at the Barclays Association of Professionals World Tour Finals trophy. Murray was the home boy and expected to receive a gigantic support at his local soil but the things didn’t work out as expected.
It was a strange view at the London’s most prestigious tennis arena. The placards in the crowd stated ‘Go Federer’ and ‘Quiet please, genius at work”. Moreover, the shouts from the spectators were not “C’mon Andy” rather “Allez,
Roger!”. It was quite discomforting for the 25-year-old Briton who was also the returning Grand Slam Champion. Even the hero of the town wasn’t able to write off the love of Federer in the heart of viewers.
The local arena of Murray left him in no man’s land as he went out to fight a battle on Sunday against Federer. No love for Murray meant too much following of Federer and that probably killed the mood of the third ranked Briton
who was shattered into the pieces by the 31-year-old Swiss. Federer took away the opening set tie-breaker 7-6(5) and didn’t moved a muscle in the second phase; won it 6-2 to wipe off the local superstar.
It was something agonizing for Murray who wanted a bit more respect and support but didn’t say anything to the crowd because they had the right to take the side of the 17-time Grand Slam Champion and the most successful player
in the indoor hard courts of London with six titles to his name. In a post-match press conference, Murray stated about the supporters reaction, “When you play Roger anywhere in the world, he gets great support. He deserves it because of everything he has achieved.”
Federer wasn’t too harsh on the reigning US Open Champion and replied to the compliment by stating, “You can’t expect the crowd to be cheering for you if you’re playing Andy in this country, so I do respect their support. I don’t take it for granted. I think
it’s very special that I do have it all around the world – not just in England.”
However, it is still astonishing for Murray to not witness a home crowd support in London. It will definitely demoralise especially considering his recent performances that includes a gold medal at Olympics and the US Open title.
