Andy Murray finally joins the ‘Grand Slam winners’ club – Tennis News
It has taken about seven years for the British tennis ace, Andy Murray, to claim his maiden Grand Slam title in the professional tennis circuit. The 25-year-old Scott finally tore the tag of ‘no Grand Slam winner’ off him after he downed the world number two, Novak Djokovic, in the final showdown of the US Open Championships last Monday.
Murray has been the regular member of the ‘Fantastic Four’ in the ATP World Rankings, along with the legendary Swiss, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Despite of playing exquisite tennis on all kind of surfaces, the Brit was always criticised of not winning a Major trophy until last week. He had already lost four Grand Slam finals but luck finally knocked his door this time round, crowning him with the coveted US Open title to shut all the critics.
It is also cited by some tennis fanatics that Murray would have not win the US Open if he had faced Nadal or Federer in the semis. Well, such comments are quite unfair for the British number one, who has been labouring his heart out throughout the season to earn this glory. His brilliant run at the 2012 Olympic Games has already proven his capabilities and sublime form this season. The Grand Slam victory in New York is merely the continuation of the gold medal victory at the London Games.
The former US Open champion, Djokovic, was very disappointed with his loss to Murray in the final but he still congratulated the young Brit on his emphatic victory. He open-heartedly welcomed Murray to the Grand Slam winners’ club and gave him his best regards for the upcoming endeavours.
"[We] four, we are taking this game to another level, and it's really nice to be part of such a strong men's tennis era… We get to the later stages of every single Grand Slam,” said the reigning world number two, Djokovic. “Andy winning tonight makes it even more competitive and more interesting for people to watch it. Andy has all the capacity he needs, all the talent on the court.  He's dedicated; he's professional.  He has proven that [for] many years already with his results.”
Murray’s triumph has elevated him to the world number three spot in the ATP World Rankings this week. With the absence of Nadal from the professional circuit, Murray is eyeing to hold on his current position for a number of months in the future.
