Andy Murray flashes past Ivan Dodig to reach round three – US Open 2012
British top ranked star, Andy Murray, crushed the Croatian contender, Ivan Dodig, with a breadstick at the US Open 2012 on Wednesday. He penned down a 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 victory against the world number 118 to cruise into the round of 32 at this major Grand Slam
event held in Queens in New York City, United States.
The Olympic Champion, Murray, showed his class at this last of the four Grand Slam events and secured a spot in the third round. Battling each other for the first time, the Scot not only edged in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2
Head Series by 1-0 against Dodig but also inched towards his maiden Grand Slam event.
Murray unveiled his true colours after stepping into the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He drew the first blood in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. The Scot maintained consistency in his game and wiping out the last three games, he
sealed the opener by winning six games to two.
Ranked fourth in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Murray kept momentum running towards the proceeding set. He got the desiderated break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. After Dodig held his serve in the third game, the Brit
unleashed barrage of groundstrokes to reel off four games in a row. He was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed in three out of four break chances to pull out the set with a breadstick.
The 25-year-old carried his rhythm in the third set and after blocking both breakpoints he faced, Murray plucked his entire serves. He cashed in the lone break chance in the fourth game and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
He will next face the winner of an all-Spanish affair between Pablo Andujar and Feliciano Lopez.
The fourth seed, David Ferrer, also stole the spotlight later that day. He triumphed over the South African number one, Kevin Anderson, in straight sets to advance. The jubilant Spaniard capitalised on three out of seven break chances to clobber a 6-4, 6-2,
7-6(3) success.
