Andy Murray gets wildcard for Davidoff Swiss Indoors at Basel – Tennis News
World number three and top ranked Brit Andy Murray looks to cement his year end position in the top three as he requested a wildcard for the 2011 Davidoff Swiss Indoors at Basel, Switzerland next week. The 2011 Australian Open
finalist moved into the top three after his hat-trick title win in Asia earlier this month.
Playing in only his second year at Basel, Murray debuted at the event in 2005. Unseeded then and ranked well outside the top 50, the Brit moved past compatriot Tim Henman and Czech Tomas Berdych in the earlier rounds before falling
to Chilean Fernando Gonzalez in the quarterfinals. However, second time around and now ranked inside the top three the Brit has a chance of clinching his first title at Basel.
Sporting an impressive 54-11 win loss mark for the season, Murray has clinched five titles this year. Starting at the Australian Open, Murray moved past David Ferrer to make it into the final where he fell to reigning world number
one, Novak Djokovic. Despite missing a Grand Slam win still, the Brit has maintained his consistency in all four Grand Slams. A final showing Down Under was backed by three semi-final appearances at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows falling to
former world number one, Rafael Nadal in all three of them. The Brit also made it to the semi-final of two Masters events in Rome and Monte Carlo.
Murray’s achieved near perfection in the grass court season as he coupled his Wimbledon showing with a title win at Queen’s Club after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final. However, Murray’s pinnacle of 2011 came in the fall
when he won the title at the Cincinnati Masters followed by back-to-back title wins in Asia post US Open, winning them at Bangkok, Tokyo and finally at the Shanghai Masters.
One in a field of talented professionals at Basel next week, Murray will be joining the likes of 2009 titlist Djokovic, five time champion here local Roger Federer, former world number six Tomas Berdych and the top ranked American
Mardy Fish.
Also joining Murray as fellow wildcard entrants is local Marco Chiudinelli and Lithuanian Laurynas Grigelis.
Following this event, win or lose, Murray will be heading making a stop at Paris for the BNP Paribas Masters before heading to the O2 Arena in London for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
