British number one, Andy Murray, has retained his top form that helped him to win London Olympics two weeks back. The four-time losing finalist is in a good position to win his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open.
He made a strong start to his title defence in Cincinnati, as he thrashed the world number 29, Sam Querrey of USA, in straight sets in the second round of the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday.
Murray dropped just six games in the entire contest, sealing it 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 15 minutes and moving to the next stage.
In the firsts set, both players did not break each other in the first four games and took the score to 2-2. Murray fully dominated the proceedings later on, claiming four in a row to triumph 6-2.
The Brit smashed three aces but his first serve percentage was quite low at 48. However, the two time former champion’s conversion rate was up to the mark, as he pocketed seven of the 10 first and nine of the 11 second delivery
points in the opener.
Murray started the second set from where he had left in the first, breaking his American opponent in the very first game and holding his following serve to go up 2-0. The British star did not give any chance to Querrey to come
back in the match, closing it 6-4.
The 6ft 3in tall bombarded four aces and snatched 14 of the 18 first serve points in the second set. The London, England resident saved both break points he faced and converted one of the two opportunities he created.
Murray said that he did not take Querrey lightly and this thing went in his favour. He said, "He's had some good wins, so I was expecting a tough match. I think that helped me. Was very sharp right at the beginning of the match. I
needed to be, and it was a good start to the tournament."
The Brit added, "In the immediate aftermath of big wins or good tournaments, normally you'll feel quite confident and comfortable going for your shots in the important moments and even at the beginning of matches. I'm hoping it
helps me not only this week but going into the US Open and big matches in the future.”
Murray is slated to meet French player, Jeremy Chardy, in the round of 32.
