Andy Murray hopes he can take advantage of Roger Federer’s new experience – Tennis News
British number one, Andy Murray, believes that Roger Federer’s first appearance in the Gold Medal match at the Olympics tennis event can go in his favour.
Federer has featured multiple times in the title match of almost all the tournaments in the sports of tennis but this is the first occasion that he has reached the final at the biggest sports event in the world.
The Swiss Maestro was first to advance to the final, after outlasting Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro in the semi-finals on Friday. It was the longest singles tennis match in the history of Olympic Games, lasting four hours and
26 minutes.
Murray joined Federer few hours later, as he upset the world number two, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 in the second semi-final. This is also the British player’s first Olympics final, who got stunned in the
first round in Beijing four years ago.
Talking to the media people in a recent interview, Murray said, “The one thing I hope on Sunday, he's not played for the gold medal in singles before and most times when I've played him he's experienced the situations way more
times than me.”
Four weeks back, Murray lost to Federer in the Wimbledon final at the same venue. By reaching the final at the All England Club, Murray had become the first player from his country in the last 100 years to do that. On the other
hand, Federer was appearing in his eighth Wimbledon title match.
Murray added, "He's played eight Wimbledon finals and it was my first one. It's so rare for him to be in a position where he's trying to do something new. I hope that will even things out a bit but it's going to be a tough match.
I hope it's a great match because I think the way the matches went today, the tournament deserves a great final."
Federer’s previous best performance at the Olympics was his semi-final appearance in the 2000 Sydney Games. He was stunned by James Blake of USA in the quarter-finals in Beijing.
After losing the Wimbledon final, Murray had vowed that he would bounce back to grab Gold Medal at the London Olympics. He is aiming to become first British player to win the tennis title at the mega event.
