Andy Murray keeps British hopes alive at Wimbledon – Tennis News
British number one, Andy Murray, lived up to the expectations of his home crowd on Wednesday’s eve to win the quarter-final battle against the world number five, David Ferrer of Spain. The fourth seed Brit had to recover from being a set down to turn the tables on the Spanish number two, winning the all-important contest at 6-7(5), 7-6(6), 6-4, 7-6(4), to reach the semis.
Aiming to end his Grand Slam title drought, Murray has been displaying his top notch performance throughout the tournament to please the British crowd present at the All England Tennis and Croquet Club in London. The world number four has repeatedly cited that his aim is to claim his maiden Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon this season and he has been on course of his dream so far. The 25-year-old Brit had some real tough encounters last week but has lived up to the expectations of the home crowd to reach the semi-final draw.
His quarter-final brawl with seventh seed Ferrer was yet another rough ride for him but it was the local support and his sheer determination that he survived the scare of losing the contest. The Spaniard defeated Murray in the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros French Open last month but the Briton took his revenge on Wednesday, breaking into a 6-5 lead in the head-to-head series against him.
“You know, subconsciously I’m probably extremely stressed out right now, but I try not to feel it,” Murray said after his quarter-final win over Ferrer. “Everyone kept telling me I had such a hard draw and how tough it was going to be to get through. You know, I managed to do that. I’ve beaten some very good players. It’s been a good tournament so far. But I want it to continue.”
Murray will have to face the belligerent French powerhouse, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in his next matchup before earning a title shot in the final of the Wimbledon Championships. On the other hand, the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, has also made it to the semis and is ever-hungry for yet another Grand Slam title. He will face his arch nemesis, world number one, Novak Djokovic, on Friday.
