Andy Murray knocks out Alex Bogomolov Jr. in the round of 16 – Western & Southern Open 2011
Fourth seed Andy Murray of Great Britain took the revenge of his loss in Miami as he ousted world number 50 Alex Bogomolov Jr. of USA in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 in the third round at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati,
Ohio on Thursday. The Brit took an hour and 41 minutes to defeat his opponent.
Murray made a remarkable start as he broke the American in the first and third game of the first set, winning four successive games to take a 4-0 lead. The right-handed maintained his lead till the end of the set, winning all of
his service games to grab it 6-2.
The British had a decent first service performance as he fired four aces and bagged ten of the thirteen points on the first serve in the opening set. Murray was erratic on the second serve, committing three double faults and claiming
just seven of the thirteen second service points. The 24-year-old, however, returned quite well as he won nine of the eighteen points on the first return and converted two of the five break points he received on the American’s serve in the first set.
Just like the first set, Murray broke his opponent in the opening game of the second set to take a 1-0 lead but this time he could not held his serve in the next game and equalised the score at 1-1. The British broke Bogomolov
Jr. again in the third game and consolidated on it to take the score to 3-1. The American was not in a mood to lose the match without a fight, breaking Murray in the eighth game to level the score at 4-4. However, a determined Murray broke for the third time
in the eleventh game and served out the set at 6-5.
The Brit said, after the match, "I was hitting the ball a little bit cleaner today. I would still definitely like to do things better. I didn't move particularly well, and that's something that I'll need to improve on in this kind
of 10, 11 days before the US Open. I want to try and make sure that's perfect before the start of the US Open."
In their only previous meeting, Bogomolov Jr. defeated the world number 4 in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 in the round of 64 at the Sony Ericsson Open earlier this year.
Murray added, "It was good. I played better today. I was struggling a lot in Miami and didn't play well at all. Glad to come through in two sets and forget about the match I played against him in Miami."
The London resident is slated to face tenth seed Gilles Simon of France in the quarterfinals.
