Andy Murray may be given the top civil honour of Scotland – Tennis News
Chances are bright that Great Britain’s most successful tennis players in the last seven decades, Andy Murray, would be awarded Freedom of the City of Stirling, which is the highest civic award in Scotland.
Murray was given a hero’s welcome in his home town, Dunblane, on Tuesday. A special parade was held in the honour of Great Britain’s first Grand Slam champion since 1976. The 25-year-old defeated Serbia’s former world number one,
Novak Djokovic, to win the US Open title at the start of this month and it marked nonstop celebrations in the entire Great Britain. However, people of Scotland, the place where Murray was raised, are happier than anyone else.
Speaking to the crowd during the parade, Stirling Council Provost, Mike Robbins, gave some idea that Murray would be honoured with the highest civil award of Scotland.
Robbins praised the top British tennis player, saying that Murray works very hard and he is a true fighter. The Provost thinks that the US Open champion has already inspired a whole generation and this will put the same effect
on the coming ones.
In his speech, Robbins said, “Andy is one of the few people out there who works relentlessly, tirelessly – when he gets knocked down, he gets back up again – and the sporting heroism we’ve seen from Andy has inspired a generation,
and will go on to inspire future generations.”
Before this year’s summer, Murray’s performances were already best by any player of his country in the last 76 years but he has become a true legend by his achievements in the last three months.
In this season, the Brit became the first player from his country to reach the final of Wimbledon Championships since 1938. Then he became the first British tennis player to capture Gold Medal in almost last 100 years. He also
grabbed s silver medal in the mixed doubles event at the biggest sports event of the world. Then his winning performance at the US Open put a cherry on the cake.
During the occasion, Murray said, “I’d like to say thank-you to everyone who came along today, it’s been overwhelming. The support I’ve had from the people of Dunblane throughout my career has been fantastic. “I’m very proud to
be Scottish today and I’m going to keep working as hard as I can to have more moments like this.”
Former tennis greats and experts believe that Murray would not stop here and win some more Grand Slams.
