Andy Murray ousts Feliciano Lopez to reach the fourth round – US Open 2011
No real trouble for the world number four, Andy Murray, in the third round of the US Open, as he disposed off the 26th ranked Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez, with the utmost ease on Sunday afternoon.
Playing at the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, Murray took just one hour and fifty four minutes of play to wrap up victory at 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
The British number one, Murray, kept his clean record against the left-handed Spaniard, defeating him for the sixth straight time. Lopez already suffered a straight sets defeat at the hands of Murray in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon Championships earlier this year, falling at 3-6, 4-6, 4-6, and now trails a 0-6 deficit against the Briton in singles encounters.
The fourth seeded Briton had a blistering start to the contest, wrapping up the opener in merely 26 minutes of play, breaking his opponent’s serve twice to take the set at 6-1. Once getting into his groove, Murray never looked back in the matchup and kept on his winning impetus to race away to victory.
“When you can get an early break, I mean, it can kind of set the tone for the rest of the match,” told Murray after registering his 37th victory of the current year. “Tonight that was the case. And it was important, because obviously after having a long match the other day, you don't want to sort of - especially playing late at night - if you don't have to play, you know, a three-, four-hour match because it's not that easy to recover.”
The Briton was greatly assisted by the error-ridden game of Lopez, who conceded 44 unforced errors, including nine expensive double faults to finish on the losing side in the end. The Spaniard failed to register a single serve break in the entire contest and suffered a total of five crushing break point conversions from the fourth seeded Briton in the match.
Murray has reached the semi-finals of all the three Grand Slam tournaments of the current, with finishing as the runner-up at the Australian Open, after losing to Novak Djokovic in the final. He will take on the local wildcard, Donald Young, in the fourth round for a place in the quarter-finals of the US open. Young stunned the 24th seeded Argentine, Juan Ignacio Chela in the third round 7-5, 6-4, 6-3, to meet Murray in the round of 16.
