Andy Murray outclasses Edouard Roger-Vasselin in round two – Monte Carlo Rolex Masters 2013
World number two, Andy Murray, had a relatively easier draw in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Wednesday when he outclassed the 81st ranked French, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
The number one Briton didn’t have to work hard for the opening clay court season victory in Monaco but will face a stern contest against the Swiss tennis star, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the third round of the event.
Murray commented at the end of the match, “I won the close games, which was important," said Murray. "I didn't make too many mistakes. It was solid. I returned well, served well; if you do those two things well on any surface.
It gives you a good base to work from. It was a good start.”
Commenting about the encounter against Wawrinka, the number one Briton said, “It will be a tough match. Good test for me. He's played some good tennis this year. He obviously enjoys the surface, has had some good results on it
in the past. I'll need to play well tomorrow to win that match.”
The opening phase of the match was completely dominated by the 25-year-old Briton who clinched a couple of breakpoints in a row to post an unassailable lead of 4-0 upfront. The 29-year-old French won a breakthrough in the following
game but couldn’t protect it with a serve hold and drowned to a trail of 1-5. Murray held his serve without losing a point and posted a set lead.
The second set was comparatively much more fascinating for the supporters in the arena. However, the early blow to the cause of Vasselin was the major factor that led to his downfall. The Olympics Gold Medallist took an early breakthrough
in the third game of the set and piled up a lead of 3-1 on his rival.
Vasselin tried his best to squeeze a breakpoint back in order to keep his chances alive but failed to do so despite several close opportunities. It was a much needed victory for the 25-year-old Briton who has failed to create any
history at the red dirt.
