Andy Murray prevails over Janko Tipsarevic in the third round – AEGON Championships 2011
World number 4 and top Brit Andy Murray knocked out Serbian number 3 Janko Tipsarevic, ranked 31st in the world, in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(3) in the third round of AEGON Championships at the Queen’s Club in London on
Thursday. It took the British two hours and five minutes to oust his opponent.
Tipsarevic drew first blood as he broke Murray in the opening game of the first set and held his next service game to go ahead 2-0. Murray hit a brutal backhand winner to break back in the sixth game, levelling the score at 3-3.
The Brit broke again in the tenth game, winning the first set 6-4.
The London resident delivered five aces and 66 percent of the first serves, grabbing 68 percent of the points on them in the first set. The right-handed returned exceptionally well as he won 38 percent of the first return points
in the opening set. Murray failed to save the only break point he faced but converted two of the three break points on his opponent’s serve in the first set.
Just like the opening set, the Serbian broke Murray in the first game of the second set and consolidated on it to take a 2-0 lead. The Brit bagged four straight points in the eighth game to break Tipsarevic and equalise the score
at 4-4. Murray and Tipsarevic held their serve in the next four games to square off the score at 6-6, forcing a tie-break. The Brit captured five consecutive points in the tie-break to blaze forward to a 5-1 lead. The 24-year-old consolidated on the three
mini-breaks and clinched the tie-break 7-3.
The six feet and three inches tall continued to serve quite well in the second set as he fired six aces and 72 percent of the first serves, sealing 77 percent of the points on them in the second set. Murray consolidated on one
of the two break points he received on Tipsarevic’s serve and saved two of the three break points he faced in the second set.
Murray said, talking to the reporters after the match, "My ankle felt fine today. I thought I moved pretty good. I didn’t feel it at all, which is the best it’s felt, which is good news. I thought I hit the ball much better from
the back of the court today.”
The Brit added, “In the second set I thought I played much better towards the end. I was creating quite a lot of chances to break and didn’t get all of them, but that’s a good sign that I’m giving myself chances. He has a big first
serve, so it was a good test."
The second seed will face world number 27 Marin Cilic of Croatia in the quarterfinals.
