Andy Murray regains four spot in world rankings
Britain’s Andy Murray has reclaimed his number four ranking in the South African Airways ATP list released on Monday.
The 23-year-old Scot, who made his ATP World Tour debut back in 2005, had previously slipped to number five in the world. Robin Soderling of Sweden rose to number four, after winning the BNP Paribas Masters two weeks ago in Paris.
Murray, who has been ranked as high as number two in the ATP list back in 2009, broke into the top ten for the first time in April 2007. He has so far played in two Grand Slam finals, at the U.S. Open in 2008 and this year’s Australian Open in Melbourne.
The right- hander however lost to world number two Roger Federer on both occasions. Murray has lifted a total of six Masters 1000 series crowns on the tour.
The Glasgow-born Murray is still more suited to the quicker surfaces such as hard courts, despite the fact that he has worked extremely hard on improving his clay court game since 2008.
Last week Murray played in the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, where he opened his account with a straight sets win over Robin Soderling of Sweden. In his second group stage game, the British number one suffered his second consecutive
loss to Roger Federer.
Murray met David Ferrer of Spain in his final round robin match, and successfully made his way into semi-final with a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Spaniard. In the semi-finals, the Scot pushed top seed Rafael Nadal to the limit for over three hours, before losing
to the world number one in a decisive third set tiebreaker.
Murray however regained fourth spot in the South African Airways rankings, by virtue of his run to semi-finals, and ends the season in the top five for the third successive season.
