Andy Murray routines David Nalbandian in the second round – Western & Southern Open 2011
No troubles for the world number four, Andy Murray of Great Britain, to dispense out the former world number three, David Nalbandian of Argentina, in the second round of Western and Southern Financial Group Masters on Wednesday afternoon.
Being a part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event, the competition was staged on the outdoor hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, near Cincinnati, United States, with the fourth seeded Briton winning comprehensively in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Murray wrapped up victory in one hour and seventeen minutes of play to eject Nalbandian from the contest and advanced to the round of 16 of the tournament with ease.
The contest was completely one-sided, with the Briton dominating every bit of it and Nalbandian struggling all the way. Murray converted six out of his 16 break points en route to victory, while the Argentine followed him with his three serve breaks to finish on the losing end. He was off to a sloppy start in the opening set but gathered up pace later on to race past Nalbandian to register his 30th victory of the running ATP season.
The last time these two men faced each other was at Paris Masters in 2010, with Murray winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 32. The Briton won Wednesday’s contest to break into a 3-2 lead in his head-to-head series with Nalbandian in singles encounters.
“I was definitely better today than last week,” said Murray in his post match reviews. “I need to try and keep that up for the next match and hopefully play just five, ten percent better tomorrow than I was today.”
The 66th ranked Argentine got a brilliant start in the opener, breaking the fourth seed in the very first game of the match, but lost his way in the later parts of the contest to lose. He broke the Briton again in the seventh game but three timely serve breaks from Murray left the Argentine answerless, closing out the opening set at 6-4.
Once getting into his groove after winning the opener, Murray raced his way through the second set with three successive serve breaks to close out victory at 6-1. The fourth seeded Briton entered the third round of Cincinnati Masters, where he will take on the American qualifier, Alex Bogomolov, for a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
