Andy Murray shares the reason behind his mixed doubles combination at London Olympics – Tennis News
Great Britain’s number one men’s tennis player, Andy Murray, spoke about his mixed doubles pairing with Laura Robson at London Olympics on Wednesday.
British tennis had body had applied for a wild card to enter their mixed doubles team but it was not confirm that which women player will join Andy Murray for this event. The two options being looked upon were British number one,
Heather Watson, and number three, Laura Robson.
Murray said, "I listened to what the coaches on the team had to say. The decision was made because that's what we felt was the best to try and win a medal. Heather played some good doubles this year so it's tough on her but tough
decisions have to be made sometimes."
Watson was expecting that she would be chosen as Murray’s partner due to her recent impressive performances. Not only, she is two places above Robson in the British singles rankings but she is also her country’s highest ranked
doubles player compared to Robson’s sixth position.
The 20-year-old had won a doubles title on the WTA Tour recently, when she partnered Marina Erakovic of New Zealand to beat Vania King and Jarmila Gajdosova in the final to capture the Bank of the West Classic title in Stanford
last month.
Watson was extremely disappointed after the announcement, as she said, "I thought I might have deserved a spot, especially as I just won a tournament. I'm just upset that I didn't get picked, but there's not much else I can do
about it now. I wanted the Olympics to go on."
The fact which went in Robson’s favour is that she partnered Murray to the final of Hopman Cup in 2011. Robson and Murray topped their pool, after winning all of their group matches. They won all those three matches in the deciding
rubber, which means that they won all three of their mixed doubles contests. However, they lost to Tommy Robredo and Maria Jose Martinez of Spain in the final.
Murray and Robson will play Lucie Hradecka and Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic in the first round here.
