Andy Murray should be proud on his achievement, says Boris Becker – Tennis News
Three-time former Wimbledon Champion, Boris Becker of Germany, has said that British number one, Andy Murray, should be proud of his performance during the last two weeks at All England Club.
Murray failed to achieve what none of his countrymen has been able to do in the last 76 years, as he lost to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final on Sunday.
However, Becker thinks that the Brit is at par with the greatest players of the game and he was not worried about playing in the final of a Grand Slam.
The German said in a recent interview, “He played in a Grand Slam final very much like he belongs there. He’s not afraid of the occasion and he can go head-to-head with the likes of Federer and he should take all the positives
from that. He should be very proud of his performance. He was spectacular.”
Whole British nation was desperately hoping that Murray becomes the first player from their country to grab the Wimbledon title since Fred Perry in 1936.
Becker added, “The poor guy is put under so much pressure throughout the whole championship. He’s the only hope this country has for somebody seriously having a go at the title. He didn’t buckle, he didn’t falter. He played extremely
well and he should build from there.”
Although Murray could not win but he still became the first British player to reach the Wimbledon final in the last 74 years.
The German star went on stay that his former rival and Murray’s new coach, Ivan Lendl, has made a lot of improvement in the Brit’s game. He stated that the 25-year-old’s game and attitude have improved a lot but there is still
some room for some improvement.
The 1996 Wimbledon Champion, Richard Krajicek, joined Becker in praising Murray, saying that this was the Brit’s best performance in a Grand Slam final. He added that Murray was just two points away from getting complete control
of the match at one time but he failed in that and momentum shifted in Federer’s favour.
Murray has lost his fourth straight final of a Grand Slam but this was the first time that he managed to win a set.
