"Andy Murray should pull out from French Open," thinks Boris Becker – Tennis News
Former world number one, Boris Becker, thinks that Britain’s top player, Andy Murray, should withdraw from the French Open, as he is suffering with a back injury.
When Murray pulled out from this month’s Mutua Madrid Open, he publicised that he is facing pain in his back since last December.
Becker believes that it is almost impossible to play a full tournament on clay courts, when one is having a back pain like Murray. He thinks that one can cope up with the situation on hard and grass courts, as points are not long
enough and it does not put so much stress. However, on the clay courts, one has to play long and gruelling points.
The German said, "I worry where Andy is physically. Back pain is a disaster on clay. On any other surface you can handle it because you can finish matches quickly, but on clay you have to be ready to play for two or three hours
every day. We saw that Andy couldn't handle that in Rome.”
He added, “If he's not fit, the question must be 'Why play at all?' Nobody can win seven matches over the next fortnight without being in decent physical condition, not even Rafael Nadal. So if he has no realistic chance of winning
a grand slam title in Paris, why not get some rest?
Murray had his best clay court season last year, as he reached the last four at Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Internazionali BNL d’Italia and French Open.
He was hoping to do better this time in all of these tournaments but that did not happen. The Brit failed to advance to the semi-finals in any of the three clay court tournaments he played this year.
The 25-year-old faced upsets losses at the hands of Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals, Milos Raonic, again, in the quarters and Richard Gasquet in the round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell
and Internazionali BNL d’Italia respectively.
Becker believes that Murray should take rest and prepare himself for the grass court season, where he has the best chance to win his first Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon Championships.
