Andy Murray surprised by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round – BNP Paribas Open 2012
World number four Andy Murray’s bad luck continued in Indian Wells, as he was upset by world number 92 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets 4-6, 2-6 in the second round at the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday.
Murray lost his third successive match at the hard courts of Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Brit was stunned by the then world number 143 Donald Young in straight sets 6-7(4), 3-6 in the opening match last year. In 2010, Murray
lost to Robin Soderling of Sweden in the quarterfinals.
The Brit and Garcia-Lopez kept their serve in the first eight games of the first set and equalised the score at 4-4. The Spaniard succeeded in grabbing a break of serve in the ninth and consolidated on it to capture it 6-4.
Murray played some poor forehand shots and paid the price for them. The Brit was unable to convert any of the four break opportunities he got and could not save the one he faced in the opener.
Garcia-Lopez’ confidence went sky high after bagging the first set. He stung Murray in the very first game of the second and capitalised on it to build a 2-0 lead. The Brit survived four break threats in the third to hold his serve
but lost three of his own chances in the fourth. The Spaniard hit the final blow in the seventh game and served out the set at 5-2.Garcia-Lopez routed Murray in an hour and 40 minutes.
Talking to the BNPParibasOpen.com, a jubilant Spaniard said, “It's one of the biggest wins in my career. It gives me a lot of confidence, as my ranking right now is not too good, so I wanted to improve it.”
Murray had entered this tournament in a good shape. He beat world number one Novak Djokovic in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships last week.
The Brit assessed, "I didn't move my best tonight, but it didn't feel like I was moving really badly. My return let me down, and he hardly missed the ball, either. That's the thing. So can't allow it to happen. I don't know exactly
why because I was playing really, really good tennis the whole of the week and the build up to it."
Garcia-Lopez will take on Ryan Harrison of USA for a place in the last 16.
