Andy Murray to start 2012 at Brisbane International – Tennis News
Another star player joins in the ranks of Brisbane tournament. This time it’s British No.1, Andy Murray that will make his way to Brisbane in January next year. He is making a comeback to this event after a gap of five years and
his participation has definitely heated up the contest with some big names still to be added.
Previously this event was played in Adelaide but now it will be contested in Queensland Tennis Centre, Brisbane, Australia. The tournament will start from January 1-8, 2012 with prize money of $ 372,500 on hard-courts.
Murray was delighted on the call from the Brisbane officials and happily accepted proclaiming “I love coming to Australia, but I've never had the opportunity to visit Queensland before. I've heard only good things about the Brisbane
International tournament, so I am looking forward to competing in January. With a quality field it is the perfect way to begin my Australian campaign.”
Cameron Pearson, Tournament Director, was contented to make this announcement and participation of World No.3 will definitely increase the viewership of the tournament. While conducting a press conference in which he announced
the participation of World No.3, Murray, he further added “Andy is arguably one of the best players on the men’s tour at the moment and he will be a real asset to the Brisbane International in 2012.”
In 2006, Andy Murray participated in the same event which was then conducted in Adelaide and made through to the last 16 but lost at the hands of Czech star, Tomas Berdych. Since then he has not played that tournament and it will
be his second opportunity to add Brisbane in his title gallery as well.
This year has been quite impressive for the British No.1 as he clinched five titles and maintained an outstanding 56-12 win-loss record. He is currently playing in the Barclays ATP Tour Finals in London at O2 Arena and is looking
to clinch his first year-end title triumph.
This year’s Brisbane tournament was won by the top seed Robin Soderling who defeated the defending champion, Andy Roddick and clinched his first Brisbane title win. This year’s list for the players that will be competing the tournament
will be out close to the start of the tournament and until now its Australian tennis ace, Tomic Bernard that have confirmed his participation in Brisbane next year.
