Andy Murray took the right decision to miss Madrid Open before the French Open – Tennis Special
World number four, Andy Murray, considers his decision of missing the last week’s major tournament to be a blessing in disguise. He was able to take some vital rest from the professional circuit which is very important to regroup,
especially before the start of the Grand Slam tournament in France.
He turned 25-year-old on May 15th but he was made to work extremely hard by the Argentine tennis ace, David Nalbandian, in the opening round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, contested in Rome, to earn the birthday
gift after battling past.
Murray considers himself to have not contested on the controversial blue clay court surface in Madrid because it would have done no good to him. It would have dismantled his confidence if he had faced an upsets just like his arch
rivals, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, that often proves to be one of the most disturbing moments especially when a player is gearing up for a big title campaign.
Number one Briton stated, “It's been good to get here early for a change. From what the players have been saying to me here, it was the best decision to make. Everyone's been applauding me for not playing, saying: 'you’re much
smarter than me’.”
He further added, “Obviously the conditions there aren't ideal, so it's good, with the French Open just a couple of weeks away, that I'm not going to have to make adjustments like the guys coming from Madrid. Right from the start
it's going to be hard. I want to try to get as many matches as possible.” He is eyeing his maiden Grand Slam title in the French Open that is just two weeks away and for that he is increased the time of his training and gym sessions to be ready for a big challenge.
Spanish number one, Rafael Nadal, will look to defend his title at the French Open but he will have go through a fierce and stubborn line up including the likes of the Serb world number one, Novak Djokovic, the Swiss Maestro, Roger
Federer, and the pumped up number one Briton, Andy Murray.
All these players are eyeing big records as well. Djokovic is looking to bag his fourth straight Grand Slam title; Federer is looking to close up to the number one spot by winning the title in Paris whereas Murray is looking to
break the Grand Slam title drought and get off the mark.
The 'Big Four' will be joined in by some upset masters, including the American number one, John Isner, Spanish number two, David Ferrer and Mutua Madrid Open 2012 finalist, Tomas Berdych. Home player, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, will look
to take advantage of the supporting conditions and Serb number two, Janko Tipsarevic, will be eyeing a similar performance as the Barclays Association of Tennis Professional season-finale. So, the stage is set for an epic red clay court championship, starting
in the last week of May.
