Andy Murray topples Marin Cilic to move to the last eight – Wimbledon Championships 2012
World number four, Andy Murray of Great Britain, completed his rain interrupted match, defeating Croatia’s Marin Cilic in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday.
The British number one required just two hours and 10 minutes of play time to complete the win.
Murray and Cilic swapped a break of serve in the first 11 games and took the proceedings to 6-5 in favour of the former. The Brit hit another blow, when Cilic served to stay in the set at that moment, to grab it 7-5.
In the second set, Murray captured lead from the start, as he clinched a breakthrough in the second game and held his following serve to build a 3-0 advantage. Serving to stay in the set at 2-5, Cilic faltered under pressure once
again, failing to hold and going down 2-6.
Murray served superbly throughout the second set, banging in four aces and 79 percent of the first serves. The Brit’s conversion rate was also impressive, as he pocketed 13 of the 15 first and three of the four second delivery
points.
The third set saw both players holding their serve in the opening three games to take the score to 2-1 in Murray’s favour. The Brit hit a blow to his Croatian opponent in the fourth and consolidated on it to attain a 4-1 lead.
Murray did not lose even a single point in the ninth game, closing it 6-3.
The British hero bombarded 10 aces and did not make any double fault, hitting 75 percent of the first deliveries and winning 15 of the 24 points on them. The 25-year-old was flawless on his second serves, as he won all eight points.
Murray said, during the post match press conference, "Obviously in matches you kind of can build momentum and build leads, and then when you stop, once you come back out again, you feel like you're starting off from square one.
But I did well today. He started the third set well. He had a few chances. I came up with some big serves. I served very well in the third set especially. There were three, four stops or something. It's not easy."
The three-time former semi-finalist, Murray, will play David Ferrer in the quarter-final.
The Bit added, talking about Ferrer’s game, "To me he's not a clay court specialist. He won last week on grass, so he's won, what, eight matches in a row on the grass?”
Murray and Ferrer will meet for the 11th time, with their head to head record tied at 5-5.
