Andy Murray trounces Benjamin Becker to enter semis – AEGON Championships 2013
Top seed, Andy Murray, got the better of the German challenger, Benjamin Becker, in straight sets at the AEGON Championships 2013 on Friday. He notched up a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory against the German to secure a spot in the final four
at this ATP World Tour 250 series event taking place in London, United Kingdom.
The Olympic gold medallist, Murray, displayed tremendous skills at the Queen’s Club to overpower Becker in their first encounter. As a result, the Brit improved to a 1-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the
31-year-old and stayed on track to grab his third title of the season.
With two breaks of serve, Murray cruised to a 4-1 lead right away in the opener. Despite losing his serve in the fifth game, the Brit remained focused and pulled out the first set with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked second in the world, Murray kept momentum sailing in the following set. He got the coveted break in the third game and took a 2-1 lead. However, the Scot squandered his lead and eventually saw him going 2-4 down. Murray
re-gained his strength after that and recovered in the seventh game. The set went to a tie-breaker where the 26-year-old cruised to a 6-0 lead before closing out the set with a 7-6(3) win.
This was Murray’s first tournament after recovering from back injury. He was out of action for four weeks and missed the French Open with his injury. However, the Scot seems to find his rhythm at this Wimbledon warm-up tournament.
Up next for Murray is the French number one, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The world number seven eased past America’s Denis Kudla in straight sets to set-up this epic battle.
The 26-year-old reflected about his next match-up in a post match presser, “It will be a big step up and also a really big test for me, because he's been playing some great tennis the last couple of months. He obviously had a very
good run at [Roland Garros] and he's a top grass-court player. He's one of the best in the world on this surface. I have had some tough matches with him on the grass before, so tomorrow will be the same.”
The fourth seeded Frenchman is coming off from a semi-final showing at the French Open. However, the Dunblane native currently leads the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 7-1 against Tsonga.
