Andy Murray tumbles over Santiago Giraldo to reach pre-quarters – Roland Garros 2012
World number four, Andy Murray, dragged down the Colombian challenger, Santiago Giraldo, in straight sets at the French Open 2012 on Saturday. He nudged up a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 score line against his unseeded opponent to breeze into the fourth round at this Grand
Slam event taking place on the red clay courts in Paris, France.
The British number one, Murray, displayed flawless performance to outsmart Giraldo in their second encounter. After ruling the match in almost two hour-long marathon, Murray not only extended his lead in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
head-to-head series by 2-0 against the Colombian but also booked a place in the round of 16.
"I served very well in the first set and that really helped," Murray reflected after the match. "He started off hitting the ball well and I was able to get a lot of free points on my serve. And once I started to get into the match and got ahead of him, I
started hitting the ball well and started dictating all the points."
Murray comfortably stepped on the Court number One and swiftly bagged his entire serves without facing any real challenge. He got the breakthrough in the sixth game by cashing in lone break chance and clicked the opener with a 6-3 win.
Seeded fourth in the tournament, Murray kept momentum rolling into the following set and held his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. He warded off the only breakpoint he faced to keep his entire serves. The Scot capitalised on one out of two break
chance in the fifth game and registered a 6-4 success.
The 25-year-old maintained consistency in his game in the third set and swiftly kept his entire serves without facing any barrier. He availed one out of four break opportunities in the seventh game and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
All in all, Murray clobbered a lower first serve share of 70 as compared to his opponent’s 74 per cent and impressively availed 45 out of 53 points on it.
Next up for the Scot is 17th seeded local star, Richard Gasquet, who devastated Tommy Haas with double bagels to set up this clash.
