Andy Murray unhappy with US Open schedule as rain delayed play for two days – Tennis News
British tennis star Andy Murray raised his concerns on very harsh scheduling for top tennis players. Murray believes that the current calendar of Association of Tennis of Professionals is gruelling and the number of matches should
be reduced.
Due to continuous rain and storm on Wednesday, all the matches at US Open were postponed. Some of the players including Spanish Rafael Nadal showed frustration at the delay as the finalist from the second half of the men’s draw
is likely to play four matches in five days now, with tournament’s final expected to take place on Monday. Nadal was trailing 3-0, down a break of serve against Muller, at the close of the play.
The delay also means that the world number one Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will have an added advantage as they played their last match on Tuesday.
There has been a lot of talk about the amount stress and fatigue placed on the tennis player by tough scheduling of the season. Murray further said that the numbers of mandatory tournaments for the players are way too many.
""After here, it will be nine weeks since I've been home. That's quite a long stretch, and it happens quite a few different times of the year.
"I just think guys get tired if you don't look after your body properly and you don't have the right people around you.
"I'm lucky now to be in a position to have guys with me all the time. But when I was younger, it's the same. If you don't have that luxury of being able to have guys, then it's going to be difficult to keep your body healthy throughout
the year."
More than fourteen players have retired during their matches in this season and another four were unable to appear for their matches at all. The responsibility rests upon the shoulders of ATP, who have been thinking only about
big bucks but when it comes to the fitness and health of players, they really have no plans.
The 24-year-old Murray further believes that Roger Federer will also admit that the season is a little bit too long. The Brit was trailing 1-2 against the inform Donald Young when the rain started to come down. Murray, who possesses
ferocious forehand and backhand shots, is expected to meet Rafael Nadal in the semi-final.
Murray, who is a top contender for the US Open title, will be looking to keep his focus on the game and play some solid tennis when he returns to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre at Flushing Meadows.
