Andy Murray vs David Ferrer: Round Robin preview – ATP World Tour Finals 2011
Final showdown of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season has begun at the prestigious O2 Arena in London, with the Top-8 male contestants straining hard to clinch glory at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. World
number three, Andy Murray of the Great Britain, will take off his season ending grand finale campaign on Monday night by taking on the world number five, David Ferrer of Spain, for a Group A matchup in the Round Robin.
The contest will be played on the indoor hard courts of the O2 Arena, with the entire British crowd backing up the local boy, Murray. With two of the hottest player of the season going one-on-one on Monday evening, the contest
is anticipated to be an absolute blinder for the tennis fans all over the globe.
Murray and Ferrer are in the Group A of the elite-eight-man field at the ATP World Tour Finals, along with the world number one, Novak Djokovic of Serbia and the seventh ranked Czech competitor, Tomas Berdych. Each player has to
go through all the other three Group members in the Round Robin stage to qualify for the semi-finals of the mega event.
Murray has been in his prime form all this season and toppled the Swiss maestro, Roger Federer of Switzerland, to claim the world number three spot last month. The Scott has a 56-12 winning ratio for the 2011 ATP season so far,
bagging five championship titles as well. Murray is 17-1 since his US Open campaign, registering championship victories on his stops at Bangkok, Tokyo and the Shanghai Masters.  His belligerent game play makes him one of the hot favourites for the season ending
trophy in London and he will take off his voyage on Tuesday against the world number five, Ferrer.
“There are no easy matches in any of the groups,” Murray expressed his views in front of the press reporters. “Ferrer played well on hard courts in the past. If I don't play well it will be a tough one. Berdych has played well
in Paris and Novak is Novak. So a lot of long points and tough matches.”
On the other hand, the fifth seed Spaniard is also riding a fine form, with 56-17 winning record in the current year. Ferrer bagged two clay-court titles earlier in the ATP season but has suffered some humiliating defeats at the
hands of inferior ranked players in his recent tournaments.
Murray leads 5-3 against Ferrer in singles encounters, with a four-match winning streak over the Spaniard. Murray registered three victories over the fifth seed in the current year, all of them coming on hard courts. He was victorious
at the Australian Open, Tokyo and most recently, in the final of the Shanghai Masters.
Murray had his best runs at the ATP World Tour Finals in 2008 and 2010, reach in the semi-finals of the event, whereas Ferrer was the finalist of the tournament in 2006 edition. The Briton is 5-0 against Ferrer on hard courts,
making him the hot favourite for Monday night’s matchup.
