Andy Murray vs Donald Young – 4th Round Preview: US Open 2011
As rain delays the remaining matches of the fourth round, of the US Open 2011, on Tuesday, 6th September, the Brit, Andy Murray awaited his pre quarter-final match against the local lad, Donald Young, due to be played
on Wednesday, 7th September, along with the quarter-finals.
Playing at the USTA Billie Jean Tennis Center at New York, USA, Murray is defending his 9th match unbeaten streak against the 22-year-old American. Prior to this match, the 24-year-old mustered Robin Haase and Feliciano
Lopez in round 2 and 3 to make his way up to the 4th.
Considering the fact that the Brit has been successful in ousting the world No.1 in the final match of the Cincinnati Open, he has a greater chance to walk off with a win against the local lad. Also, the world No.4 has been on
a 9-1 win loss record in his previous 10 fixtures, all of them on hard circuits.
Bearing in mind that the former world No.2 has had ups and down, he still has a unique playing technique. Irritating to some of the analysts, Murray is better described as a defensive counter-puncher. Playing more like a transitional
player, the 24-year-old switches from defence to offence with speed and surprises his opponents to gain crucial points.
Murray often strengthens his play with ground strokes with fewer errors. Well thought of as a top returner in the game, the Brit has great ability to anticipate and react. Also, the former world No.2 is criticized for his passive
style of play and lack of offensive strokes, prompting some to call him a ‘Pusher’.
Nevertheless, Murray is one of the most intelligent tacticians on the court, often constructing points through surprises.
On the other hand, the former ‘ball boy’, Young, has been streaming up the rankings lately. The extraordinary left hander has been marvellous in his recent fixtures. His best finishes this season was at Washington last month when
he reached up to the semis beating Jurgen Melzer, Michael Russell and Marcos Baghdatis before losing to Radek Stepanek.
Following his defeat in Washington, world No.84 opted to play at Cincinnati and Winston-Salem, however, proved not much of a hurdle for the other players. The 22-year-old entered the US Open as a ‘Lucky Loser’, however, managed
to beat Stanislas Wawrinka and Juan Ignacio Chela and into the 4th round.
Regardless the fact that the local lad is less experienced and is no way near the world No.4 in rankings, however, Murray is known for getting beaten up unexpectedly. Also the 22-year-old has startled many players that are well
above his rankings. Nevertheless, if the young American can counter the Brit’s first serve, he might as well win his way into the quarter-finals.
