Andy Murray vs. Tobias Kamke – Second Round Preview: Wimbledon Championships 2011
Top local and fourth seed, Andy Murray continues his bid for a maiden Grand Slam win at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London on Wednesday, 22nd June as he takes on German Tobias Kamke in
their second round match here.
Ranked 4th in the world, Murray is Britain’s only hope of a home grown champion here since no Brit has ever managed a title win in the Open Era. The last Brit to win a title here was Fred Perry who won three back to
back titles here from 1934-36.
However, putting Britain back on the tennis map, Murray has as much chance of winning the title here as Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic. Enjoying top form this season, Murray started the year on a high note as he made his second
consecutive final appearance at Melbourne Park, though he failed to clinch a title win losing to Djokovic in straight sets.
Dejected with his loss, Murray’s game took a big hit as he met three successive first round exits. Reforming in the clay court season, the Scot made his first semi-final appearance on tour this season at Monte Carlo. He was ousted
by eventual champion Nadal here. He made it to another Masters’ semi-final in April, when he lost to eventual champion Djokovic at Madrid.
Continuing to shine in the season’s Grand Slam, the Brit made it all the way to the semi-final of the 2011 Roland Garros before losing to eventual champion, Nadal. Hoping to go a step further in the grass Grand Slam, Murray is
full of confidence and resolve. This resolve of Murray was only strengthened a week ago when he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Queen’s Club to clinch his first title of the season.
In only his seventh year here, Murray has never made it past the semis here, achieving his career best in 2009 and then again in 2010. Sporting a good enough 29-5 win loss here, Murray backed by the local crowd support may just
ride the cheers of his home crowd all the way into his first final here. Starting his campaign against Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Murray bounced from a set down as he secured a four set victory against the Spaniard.
Playing Kamke for the first time ever, Murray is expected to move past the German with the utmost ease. An abominable 4-11 win loss mark for the season; Kamke is the clear cut loser of the match on paper.
In only his fourth appearance here, Kamke’s career best came last year when he made it all the way to the third round before losing to Tsonga. However, this time around his journey may be cut short.
Prediction: With the home crowd advantage coupled with the statistical edge, Murray is expected to sail past the German in straight sets.
