Andy Murray pulls out of the Davis Cup – Tennis News
British number one, Andy Murray, took advice from his physician to take rest after sustaining some minor injuries at the Australian Open 2012. As a result, he was forced to pull out from the David Cup tie against Slovakia taking place at the Braehead Arena
in Glasgow next week.
The 24-year-old made an exceptional start of 2012 as he cruised past everyone to lift his 22nd career title at the Brisbane International, the first ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour event of the season.
Ranked 4th in the South African Airways ATP World Rankings, Murray, carried his momentum into the first of the four Grand Slam event taking place on the hard courts in Melbourne, Australia. He struggled in his opening round match but never lost
a set afterwards until he reached the semi-finals. The Scott then halted 26th seeded Japanese, Kei Nishikori, in straight sets to set-up a date with the world number one, Novak Djokovic. He gave tough time to the Serbian number one and dragged the
match to five sets. Regardless of exiting in the end, Murray received praises for his tremendous skills and abilities.
“I have been told to take a few weeks away from the sport after picking up a few minor injuries...I’m gutted, having enjoyed playing the cup last year,” the Scott commented. “But, as it’s only the start of an important season, it’s probably sensible.”
Murray is eying for the Olympics glory taking place in his home soil and his maiden Grand Slam title this season.
“My focus is the Grand Slam events and the Olympics. I look forward to the Davis Cup later in the year,” Murray added.
The Scott is spending some time in Miami before the Dubai Championships starts on February 20th.
"I am 100% behind Andy's decision," said Leon Smith, who is the Britain’s captain for the Davis Cup. "Coupled with the Olympics, it is a packed schedule and it is a very important year for Andy."
British number five, Dan Evans, joins the Davis Cup team to fill the spot for Murray. Other team members include James Ward, Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins. Slovakian side seems strong based on the world rankings but Smith is confident of earning the limelight.
